Why Limerick gutters block

Leaves in autumn, and moss all year. As moss on the roof loosens, it washes down the slope and collects in the gutters. Munster Gutters says that a moss problem on the roof very often shows up first as a gutter problem at ground level, with gutters packed solid with moss and grit (Munster Gutters).

How gutter cleaning is done

1. Look first.Check the gutters, the joints and the downpipes. Photos help if you're asking for a price.
2. Clear the gutters.By hand from a ladder or lift, or with a gutter vacuum on a pole from the ground.
3. Bag the debris.Moss, leaves and grit are collected, not tipped onto the garden.
4. Flush the downpipes.Water is run through to make sure the downpipes and gullies are clear.
5. Check for faults.Leaking joints, sagging runs and loose brackets are pointed out and priced separately.

How often to clean gutters

Once a year suits most houses, ideally after the leaves come down in autumn. Houses under trees, or with a lot of moss on the roof, may need it more often. If the roof is being cleaned, have the gutters cleared at the end of that job.

Cleaning or repair: how to tell

If water still comes over after the gutter is cleared, the fault may be the gutter itself: a sag, a split joint or a bracket that has pulled away. That's a repair, not a clean. A good company tells you which it is and gives you a separate price for the repair.

Gutter guards

Mesh or brush guards can cut down how much gets into a gutter, especially under trees. They don't stop moss grit completely, and they need clearing themselves now and then. If you're thinking about them, ask for a price with and without.

Doing it yourself, safely

A single-storey gutter, from a steady ladder, with someone holding it, is something many people do. Anything higher, or over a conservatory, is safer left to a company with the right equipment.
